Back in the 1970s, there were a lot of bears in Yosemite Valley. My sister went camping there, and they didn't have a tent so slept on the ground in the open. Middle of the night she felt something poke her side and then heard "sniff, sniff, snuffle, snuffle" Poked her again in a different place. Same "sniff, sniff, snuffle, snuffle."

She slid way down into the sleeping bag.

Heard something walking away and peeked out and it had been a big black bear.
