There's no way of knowing. No its easily knowable. The information as to the US GDP, and the GDP of the other countries at the time is easily available. US GDP in 1944 was $1499 bil (in 1990 dollars) (from my previous source and also from onwar.com ) The US spent 37.8% of GDP on the military so that's $566.6 bil (again in 1990 dollars) No other country in the world had a GDP that was as high as our military spending. From both onwar.com and en.wikipedia.org You can see that none of the other belligerents GDP exceeded $437bil (in 1990 dollars) at any point in the war. We probably spent a lower percentage than the other major powers involved in the war, but at our peak we spent more on the military, than the entire economy, both military and civilian production, of any other country. Thanks for making my point. The fact that military spending went from 85% to 20.5% of the federal budget (actually more like 17 to 19 % because it includes categories that aren't military spending) refutes your point.

Besides, what % of GDP it is is beside the point. We're the richest country on Earth by far. Our military spending is equal to the rest of the entire world's combined. Do we believe the ENTIRE WORLD is going to unite against us? Some extreme right wingnuts believe they already ARE, but I'm talking about sane people.. At the same time, we're geographically one of the safest countries from invasion. Our only land neighbors are Mexico and Canada, both long time friends and allies. I think we could actually "defend America" with about a tenth of what we have now. Our giant military is for mucking about in the rest of the world - at great cost to our citizenry.
