>>No, Bush was not able to get his social security plans off the ground. The Dems successfully got in the way of that, and maybe we dodged a bullet, because in hindsight, Bush's privatization plans were too aggressive. However, that still means that we have done nothing about social security and it is still a massive problem left for future generations.<<

Here is my response to the above mindmeld. The dems had to stop The neo cons social security efforts because what the neo cons wanted to do was more of the same i.e. get the social security trust fund into the hands of the private sector i.e. more of the same. Just think how much they could make in commissions.

Let me give you one of the most egregious examples of what has been going on. Student loans.

Instead of having the government make low interest loans to poor college students, the right wingers turned it over to the banks who put 2% onto the cost of the and loan and then the goverment guaranteed the loans. 2% and no risk. Free lunch.

So the banks get 2% and the government insures the loans. No risk at all to the bank just a 2% giveaway.

And who has to pay that back? Poor college students. The banks get rich and have no risk and the college students pay 2% more than if the government had made the loans.

The social security idea was just more of the same giveaway to the rich.

A strong society needs a highly eduated populace, so it makes sense for the government to assist students with low interst loans.

It cost me and my ex's almost 1/2 million dollas to educate our two daughters. In Denmark everyone can get a PHD for free and take as long as they want.

The Danes are considered the happiest people on earth and have very high taxes. They also have universal health care and very highly educated, healthy and happy population.

Isn't that the goal of a society?
