SS will likely be gone in 3 years and we'll think it was the right thing to do. And we'll on the ground in southern Pakistan trying to take the coast. And 100's more will locked away for life and 100's more assissnated. It ain't looking good when "pledging allegiance to OBL' is what our President thinks in sufficient reason to lock someone away for life with no rights, no trial, no nothing. sorry... but it was a really despressing speech full of a few pretty words today.

and to the point of my last post... what does SS matter? or healthcare? or anything if we are busting down doors in faraway lands in the middle of the night and locking people away because they want to harm us? not have. not planned to. but expressed a "clear desire" to do so?

fak, you could say you want to kill me and mean it. not a thing I could do about that legally. but someone saying "I want to kill Americans"... he we can lock away forever without a blip.

as the man who Obama says is his savior said... to paraphrase - what profit it a man to have riches if he loses his soul?

Good example with the Danes. Norway is another great example of that. The US is bigger and poorer per capita, so I'm not sure that we can implement those models. However, you are correct that tax levels and happiness are not correlated.

Think about this, though. I know the GOP is mostly interested in crony capitalism nowadays. We can all thank Cheney more than anyone else for that. However, right now, I get a negative return on my invested social security dollars. When they fix social security by taxing us more or raising the age requirement, then I will get even more of a negative return. If the Congress were to privatize it and give Wall Street 2% of the cut, then sure that is crony capitalism to a certain extent. However, my return on investment would become positive, so it is a win win. Right now, it is a losing proposition for me at a time when I need every penny I earn to be funneled into retirement and college education for my kids.
