Well said.

The thesis that the right wing never undestands is that they are part of a tribe (society); and as part of that society they have both practical and moral rasons for helping all memebers of the tribe.

The self severing reasons are that it is important to keep the tribe strong so it can fight off enemies.

And: "The moral test of a government is how it treats those who are at the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the aged; and those who are in the shadow of life, the sick and the needy, and the handicapped." - Hubert Humphrey

"And it's not just that I get a negative return on money that I make that is supposed to be saved for my retirement,..

You have no understanding of the SS system.

SS is not and never was a "retirement" system.

It is an intergenerational contract to help folks cope as they age and lose their earning capacity, hence Social Security.

That was all it ever was supposed to be.

The problem is folks haven't been taught what it is.

By thinking of it as what it isn't, you get to the GOP brain fart that thinks it is "your money" or a savings account.

This is another of the massive failures of education in this country.<<

well Metacomet if thats what SS is, then it needs to be means tested. We just can't bankrupt an entire nation to pay for something that the recipient doesn't really need, in order to adhere to a "social contract" which by its very definition implies means testing. To me that is the issue.

I've done plenty of reading on SS and understand it intricately. When it was first created, it was not supposed to be such that today's workers paid for today's retirees. However, the more outflows outstrip inflows, that is precisely how it turns out.

No program that doesn't match outflows to inflows is sustainable. SS in its current form is not sustainable, especially now that this country is broke. Something needs to change and the Dems need to come to the table and realize that. Obama already does and he's put forward some good ideas to make it solvent, but the far left doesn't want to compromise until the problem explodes. Seems reckless to me.
