You typically have to make a special request ahead of time. They never have them at any WFC branches I go to.

Don't. $500 and $1000 US dollar bills are in the hands of private collectors, they haven't been printed in decades. And when they show up at financial institutions to be broken down to smaller bills (no one else will do it), they quite often turn out to have been obtained from burglaries, etc. Legit owners know that they are worth more than their printed face value, but scumbags tend to just want 5 $100 bills for the $500's. Some get a free ride downtown because those large bills instantly put bank tellers and such on their toes. (Serial numbers of large denomination / rare stolen bills are sometimes circulated. And if not grabbed up right then, they're on video for later use.)

Sometimes, it's dumbasses with an 'inheritance' that didn't go through probate. On at least one occasion, that turned into a clusterfuck, as the other relatives found out and sued everyone to hell and gone. Attorney fees ate up half the estate.

There's no reason to even attempt to stockpile extra-large denominations of US currency. 100 benjamins = $10,000USD. And it doesn't take up very much space at all. $10K+ can easily fit in a regular Campbells soup can.
