"Social workers help save families and individuals who are in trouble. Possibly in the strict case of crisis intervention your statement is correct. However, in most other circumstances it is very often the blind leading the blind toward catastrophy. I've met many social workers and the biggest difference between them and the people they 'serve' is that the government is paying them. Many are disfunctional in their own lives and cause more problems than they fix when dealing with others. There is little or no accountability and if there were it would be seen that they nurture and enable people to be more helpless, down trodden, and dependant. "I think that's pretty damn valuable work........even more important than producing widgets." Let me know when you and your family learn to survive without technology and innovation. When you have mastered that let me know how you intend to keep the other 7 billion people alive and well, while producing nothing. Social workers collect checks without producing anything. The saving lives image is a myth. Most are hateful people who need clients who are failures to justify their wages. If you want to help people, get off you butt and be a model of productivity who encourages others to stand with you elbow to elbow in the struggle to contribute to the general well being of all.
