They seem to be threatening in order to prevent NK ships from being boarded and inspected. It is a dangerous move to allow their ships to move without inspection throughout the world. The world had better realize that Iran and similar entities have no concern for the damage of retaliatory strikes. They may actually believe it is their responsibility to bring the "end" of the world as we know it. Especially if taking out Israel is part and parcel.

"Russia? Why in the world would Russia get involved."

Because they have a vested interest in not having nuclear weapons being slung around their continent.

"And China?"

Look on a map. If NK starts dropping nukes on SK, who gets affected most by the fallout? They too have a vested interest in keeping nukes to a minimum in their area.

Bad for business and all that.

IMO, NK is testing how weak Obama is, probing if he the US guarantee of protective umbrella over SK can be weakened, or even proven worthless.

Not true......the gov't is going through a shakeup now that Kim is sick. Dictatorships always make threatening gestures to the outside world when their internal world is in flux.

Besides, Obama has proven his mettle in Pakistan. He's got bigger cojones than Bush.
