I worked at a steelmill in the mid-70's. Same one that Roberts from the supreme court worked at.

A good buddy of mine lost his index finger. He got $1800 bucks for that. Another fellow there had lost 2 fingers and was called the "three toed sloth". I don't know, but I guess he got $3600.

Some of it was very dangerous work and I was just trying to get out of there with enough bucks for college and with all my appendages.

Coal miners STILL face more dangers today than I was facing back then.

BUT, a lot of the people I worked with had no special skills or intellect yet they were still able to live "middle class" lives. Those opportunities are dwindling in the U.S. today.
