you hit on something. You a baseball fan? Unfortunately we live in the american league and we are the designated hitter. I am not happy about that either but we became this way, not by choice but because our allies refuse to defend themselves. Look....if you have a smuck whose willing to the pick up the restaurant tab every time you go out, after a while how hard do you fight with him over the bill? Now the US is not a total smuck.......our offset is our defense industry......it provides weaponry all over the world and employment for Americans. At first it kind of worked.....the first presidents after WW II were mindful of the deficit run up during the war and worked to pay it down: zfacts.com That was before we became truly corrupted. Something happened after Carter......oh that's right....the snake oil salesman Reagan took over. That's when the Rs decided to take full advantage of the situation and the deficit began to climb. Clinton worked to reverse it to some degree but then Bush II took over and spent like a drunken sailor. You know what they say......democracy will end when they come to steal the Treasury. So if you think I am little angry with the game that's been perpetuated in this country, you would be very right! Next time an ally whines because of our twin deficits, our t-bill rates, the lower dollar etc., they should look in the mirror. You get what you pay for and what you are paying for is Uncle being the ultimate defender of the world. Dont like it, europe, put your kids on the front line. I am sympathetic to your view of things but at the end of the day we are not only defending them but we are defending ourselves as well. Oh crap.....you've bought the Reagan scenario hook, line and sinker. And you think you are so clever. Have you read 1984? If so, read it again. We are Oceania. Re: iraq, will bet you a hypothetical beer that hypothetical pres gore would have done pretty much the same thing in iraq if only to prove that dems are as tough as reps in the post-9/11 world. I doubt it but if he had, he would have been as stupid as Bush.
