If you want to see the "birth" of a religion in modern times, you could study either Mormonism or Scientology. Both are total scam religions, the first founded by an 18th century American con man, the latter founded by a clever science fiction author. Once rolling, the church leadership in both cases took over, actively promoted the scam for their own advancement, enrichment and empowerment, suppressed dissent within the church and obtained conflicting contemporary documents and hid them or destroyed them. Both now sport millions of believers and massive monetary war chests, as well as the tax advantages and legal protections we give to religions. There's no reason to believe that either Christianity or Islam is any different from these more contemporary religions. One difference is that BOTH Christianity and Islam have had periods of TOTAL political control, when they were able to seize or destroy all possible conflicting evidence to their beliefs.
