The difference is that you are convinced society as a whole will be better off for it, and I am not.

I am not making a value judgment here; as a student of social sciences, I observe what is and how political currents flow. I have the luxury of not being fixed in a normative position about those currents. So I don't share the burden that political ideologues or religious believers have, that everyone should discover, believe and obey the immutable truths of my particular cause.

Social history in the US in the last 50-100 years has seen a steady move away from those "Here are the dictates everyone must follow to the letter" kind of attitudes. There are sloppy consequences to that, no doubt, but they are a plus for individual freedom and rights.
