Social history in the US in the last 50-100 years has seen a steady move away from those "Here are the dictates everyone must follow to the letter" kind of attitudes. There are sloppy consequences to that, no doubt, but they are a plus for individual freedom and rights.

Well said. It is a trade-off. I think of it as a kind of grand experiment underway. What remains to be seen is what kind of society emerges from the process at the end. Free of boundaries, people enchain themselves with the consequences of bad decisions, some so great they're lifelong burdens sapping the energy of the individual. So far the stats don't look good for society as a whole.
