Suggestions on calling your Senator or Congressman

First - Prepare Before Calling:

1. Organize your thoughts on a given issue

2. Write your major points down on paper

3. Organize your major points in order of importance, in order of action needed

4. Write/scribble supporting notes for the major points

5. Review your notes and reorganize with the most important point first

6. Now to the next step----Call

Second:

1. Call: House of Representatives 1-202-225-3121

Call: Senate Offices 1-202-224-3121

2. Ask switchboard operator to be connected to your Congressman or Senator's office

3. Connected with Congressman's office, identify yourself and ask to speak with the legislative assistant handling a given issue----i.e. Medical Insurance/health care

4. Usually you will get to someone rapidly---

5. With your organized notes, you are ready to politely make your points

6. Stay focused and polite-----

General Note

This is what I followed in calling about the current issue of Federal control over our personal health care decisions and personal choice in paying for insurance.

When I did this I was able to consolidate my remarks which were actually suggestions/recommendations for the Congressman on legislation being considered this week to four points.

Many people on this board and on SI have vast experience and insight, calling is one way to bring that wisdom to the Congressman and Senators.

Don't hesitate to use your credentials and experience when you introduce yourself.

Unless we speak up, we remain silent----so make your calls on the issues/legislation of concern to you.

Is the cost truly the cost the hospital states it is??? Or is that a "paper thing".....

I think it is largely a "'paper thing". Hospital charges are crazy. It is true that they have to take care of large numbers of non-paying cases... but the charges are still way too high. Usually they are open to discussion - and will accept smaller amounts.

Generally, the patient CAN use home meds, but that is not encouraged. But if the patient insists, usually they'll allow it - if approved by the doctor.

About big new federal initiatives.... apologize for linking so much from another thread, but this morning I did formulate - very briefly - my main objection:
