I'd say the timing of the cut, being simultaneous with the NK nuclear and missile testing, is the issue.

Let's set the record straight here. The White House and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have proposed reducing missile defense spending from $10 billion to $9 billion. The missile network in Alaska would still exist, and it would have 30 interceptors.

Yes. Let's set the record straight. The cut is for 15%, which, presumably, amounts to 1.5 Billion of a $10B budget. And while the number of "interceptors" may not decrease, the problem is that it isn't being ramped up at the planned pace.

Palin didn't explain why she perceives this as a "show of weakness

She shouldn't have to -- it is self-evident. These cuts have coincided with an increase in saber-rattling and now, even a hostage taking, in NK.

While it is easy to understand a misguided president making the mistake Obama made in the first place, it is hard to understand his unwillingness to back up on it now. The appropriate action, given where we are today, would be for Obama to clearly state, "Perhaps we were a bit hasty in cutting back our missile defense spending; it is my decision to ramp up spending from the previously planned $10B to $15B, in light of NK's obtuse behavior".

Update: As a couple of commenters remind me, all of this is premised on the notion that the defense network actually works -- a dubious proposition, to be sure.

Oh, bullshit. We know it works. You guys have been harping about SDI first, now missile defense, for 30 years. It was one of the most important initiatives in the last 100 years, and you're sick that Carter (the "engineer") didn't have the gumption to do it.

Missile defense was Reagan's idea. From start to finish. And it kills you guys to think the "warmonger" actually dreamed up an idea that would lead to not only reduced threats worldwide from missile strikes, but the end of the Cold War and reduced nuclear threat on top of it.

And now we've got another nitwit liberal in office. Frankly, we don't have another Reagan lined up so I don't know who is going to clean up after this idiot you guys elected in Nov.
