Scott,
I've had good luck trading on the internet with National Discount Brokers. Often I get filled at better than my limit orders.
Make a short list of stocks with great fundamentals you'd like to own but missed out on.
Take advantage at times like this..cause they will be the ones that rebound first.
Unless you can afford to get a margin call, never buy on margin.
Options can be better, but at first I'd stick with writing covered calls on what you own.
Jim

Scott - I use E.Schwab - the software allows you to either trade on the web or thru their proprietary hookup. I have had no problem using the non-web method, it is usually faster, and bypasses all this busy signal/net hang crap. If you use Schwab 500, they are also usually pretty good. Today is a good example of the downside for all these el cheapo net trading firms. If you are a serious trader you wanted to be in this morning, but I'll bet you could not be on Etrade and all the rest due to volume....
