bad sign ...Is it?

....Concurrently with the development of those color panels, QMT proposed some proprietary indices to indicate the display performance. One of them is the mobile color depth, an index to be used in place of color variation and contrast ratio.

"The existing indices of LCD performance, such as the color variation and contrast ratio, are based on the assumption that displays are used in dark rooms," Cathey said. "In a bright room, it means nothing no matter high these values are. On the other hand, the mobile color depth indicates the screen viewability in a typical usage situation of mobile devices. We should use this new index to compare mobile phones because they are often used outdoors.

Though I am skeptical, this is certainly a good sign for the long-term future of Mirasol.

Taiwan-based Foxlink plan to look for cooperation from panel makers to build a second mirasol plant in 2009 to fulfill the demand from both vendors and system makers, according to company chairman Gou Tai-chiang.

Foxlink's freshly completed 4.5G mirasol display fab, with technologies and equipment provided by Qualcomm's wholly own subsidiary Qualcomm MEMS Technologies (QMT), is expected to reach mass production in a year, Gou said. A ceremony was held on June 15 to officially kick off operation at the fab in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan.

Currently, monthly capacity of the 4.5G plant is only 4,000 panels, Gou noted.

Gou indicated that Foxlink and Qualcomm MEMS's next development will be adoption of MediaFlo technologies for mobile TV. Foxlink expects to establish a long-term cooperation with Qualcomm MEMS for Qualcomm's 3.5G and 4G handheld communication devices, and also for other applications such as smartbooks and color e-book readers, Gou added..
