I understand all that. I've worked out vigorously for over 30 years. I have an asymmetrical disc herniation with a chunk that broke loose and which compresses a horsetail nerve between L3 and L4. Not all back pain is the same.

Eventually my body will likely either re-absorb this disc material, or render it harmless. I'm 10 months out, managed to avoid surgery although for 8 weeks last summer it was incredibly painful, and still affects me. However, I biked over 40 miles today so I'm getting somewhere finally. Chances are I will be back to normal by next summer, provided I don't do any heavy lifting. The worst part of injuring my back was that I could not exercise for a number of months and gained about 15 pounds. It's finally starting to come back off though.

Over the years, nothing has helped avoid lower back pain than to stretch my hamstrings.
