Well I can't let that pass. I must say I would like to work for you, because I wouldn't have to work very hard. "You are protected daily because the government runs a great military. " Well we have a great Military, but at extremely high cost and a great deal of waste. "You are protected from crime because the government in the form of a police force runs well." This must be your idea of a joke. The fact is if a crime is perpatrated on you, the police might, if you are likely, respond long after the criminals are gone and fill out a report. If they should get lucky and find the perp, some mush minded judge will find a reason to release him/her. This is not a knock against police, who want to do a good job. It is a knock against a system that won't let them. "Your library gives you ample books to read as well as other sources and does so running well. " OK you win we do have nice libraries and as far as I know there is not a lot of waste. "You are safe in the air and in the foods you eat because the government runs well. " Both of these propositions are arguable in my mind. "My mail gets delivered on time and undamaged because the post office runs well" You surely are the only person in America who can make this claim. I worked my way through college at the P.O. My father in law was a mail carrier. The amount of waste is disgusting. Most carriers work less than 5 hours a day. The abuse of sick leave is incredible. And oh by the way most of us prefer Federal Express and UPS where available. You failed to mention schools which cost more and get worse every year. Social Security which is hopelessly underfunded. If you are in your thirtys you really love it. Paying for nothing. Ditto, only worse for Medicare. We are unable to protect our borders. We have a tax code that is so complicated that the people who wrote it can't understand it, if they even bothered to read it, and, is grossly unfair and invasive of our privacy. The estimates are that the government takes 40% of GNP. Are you happy paying 40% of your income for what you are getting. If so you are a docile comsumer. I, for one, think the government needs to do a lot better. lj ps You are protected from fire because the government runs well. Fire protection where I live went from the best in the nation, to mediocore, then bad then worse than bad.
