I doubt there has been a prosecution for adultery in more than 40 years even in Carolina. He should be impeached if he does not resign but not for adultery. He left the country without transferring responsibility for the office he was elected to fill. Left no way to be contacted. Enlisted subordinates to lie for him, etc.

He has also called on others to resign for similar conduct. Even Bubba did not get impeached for adultery. But Sanford can distinguish himself by resigning and should do so without delay.

From what little i know, she's a wealthy heiress who has bankrolled her husband's political career. His career may mean as much or more to her than to him.

From what I understand, he is well off in his own right.
