"but I'm not going to pretend that something is, just because it might be nice"

That is ABSOLUTE HORSE DUNG.

If star dust did not have potentiality to be YOU then YOU would not be here. CAPICHE??

But you ARE HERE, RIGHT??

Does that give star dust "rights"??

An infant is a "potential" adult. Does that give it a "right" to drive--or to have sex or marriage??

Every human is potentially ashes and dust and all become so. Do we treat all dust and ashes as sacred beings with "rights??

Enough of this crap, already. I'm tired of talking down to a childish level. We don't recognise "rights" because of potentials. An egg is a potential human (just as star dust and every other thing is). But it needs to be mixed with sperm and warmth and nourishment, etc. A zygote is a potential person but it needs to be mixed with minerals, vitamins, enzymes, countless bacteria and antibodies and so forth. Entities do not have rights for what they may be. They have rights for what they are. A kid MAY have the right to drive a car if he grows up and stays out of jail. His "potential" DOES NOT GIVE HIM THE RIGHT while he is a kid.

A person WILL become ashes and dust and fertilizer and tomatoes...

Rights cannot be held by entities by virtue of being POTENTIAL adults, Jews, Fathers, Shareholders, Minorities, Voters, or whales. We don't grant or acknowledge rights to POTENTIALS because only things that exist can have rights. If you want to give rights to a zygote it cannot be because it IS a potential tomato...it must be because you think a zygote has rights as a zygote. otherwise we would strip every single entity of "rights"--because potentially (and inevitably) we end up as a mishmash of elements being rearranged--and then as a one-legged goose with a broken wing.

"No. Not a single sperm or egg has potential sentience"

I am aggrieved to see you putting on the stupid act. I truly thought better of you. You know very well that EVERY single sperm or egg has potential sentience and that ONLY ONE SPERM AND ONE EGG will go on to mix with several million other elements to become a zygote and possibly a human person. But every egg and every sperm that failed HAD the potential...and eventually they WILL be tomatoes and cups and magggots and old socks...and some of them human persons.

"A dolphin isn't the equivalent of a human."

And a human isn't the equivalent of a dolphin. What is your point? This is not news. You started off pretending that sentience (do you remember??) had something to do with rights. But now we are back to the tribe, the color, and the sword...
