On the cost of healthcare, Steve, my own perception is that the only serious way to reduce the costs and address the screwed up system is to invoke a strong public health option. Lots of other things can and should be done. But without that, we are stuck with the same sick puppy. On the humane issue and your point about Terri Schiavo (both of us probably got the spelling wrong), it's one thing to say that people should be allowed to die with dignity, with which it's impossible to disagree, it's quite another to say that the government should limit healthcare during the last several months of life. For that to be an accepted cultural norm, that would require an enormous shift. Not possible, at least politically, right now.
