Fang Li you wrote: << Do deal announcements for adapters imply that the deals for switches are near?.>>

1. Most likely. Adapters are needed in all 3 FC configurations, ie. point-to-point, arbitrated loop and finally switched fabric. With switch prices coming down so fast, dedicated bandwidth via a switch makes the switch architecture much more cost competitive with arbitrated loop, hence speeding up adoption of FC switches.

2. Re: DEC, I see Broke- Aid in DEC's future. As I mentioned before, OEM's who had an aggressive launch timetable to meet ( eg Sequent ) could not wait for Ancor's MKII/Optimized Class 2/3 to become available. DEC probably also falls into this category. BTW, this is strictly my own speculation ( DEC/Broke-Aid ) based on what I have recently heard in the Industry. I have no specific facts on this matter.

Fang Li,

Kerry answered your question pretty completely, and I agree with him. I compare the Fibre Channel market to the early stages of the Ethernet market. There was no wide-spread demand for switches until there were a number of adapters out there, and network congestion began to be a problem. The difference between Ethernet and Fibre Channel is that Fibre Channel is targetted initially at the high-end. That should mean that the move to switches will occur more rapidly.

I believe that adapter announcements imply that deals for SOMETHING is near. Those adapters will have to hook to each other (very limited), to hubs (performance limited), to switches (most flexible and scalable), or to a combination of these.
