This idea might work. But our politicos won't go for it. They want to own the action.

You are a little more cynical than me (but I was more cynical when the Reps were in charge). It would still take a dismissal of employer paid health insurance... and nobody is ready to give up that 'benefit'. So we can't get 'there from here'.

What is totally frustrating about this whole mess is that we have a dysfunctional system, but the majority has a big stake in the status quo. So the best solutions are beyond (political) reach.

And IMHO you are wrong... it's not the politicians, it's their constituency. Imagine the reelection prospects of a politicians that says "I'm going to take away your employer paid health 'benefit'".
