re: Most of these were chronicled on the Last Mile Technologies thread here in SI, sometimes by the CEO or by some other significant player in those outfits, themselves. Ah, those were the days. Back when the last mile thread on SI was one of the few broadband discussion forums (broadband wasn't actually "real" yet, back in 1995-6), and company execs didn't avoid internet forums the way they do today. Now with the fog of blogs and a thousand other new e-organisms discussing tech, there probably isn't a single one that has 1% mindshare, and SI is probably in the bottom decile. So it goes.
