Today's announcement:

-Bell Canada has selected Alcatel...pending successful contract negotiations.

Previously announced from TeleChoice:
Copied from TeleChoice (10/22) re BC launcing ADSL Service using WSTL:

"Westell in the meanwhile will be moving full speed ahead with its own
DSLAM plans in order to hopefully offset the Alcatel award. An Amati
DMT-enabled SuperVision platform -- scheduled for beta testing by EOY97
and general availability in 1Q98 -- could give Bell Canada reason to
rethink the decision to go with an Alcatel 3.0-enabled DSLAM. Westell
contends that the Bell Canada RFP is a non-exclusive, non-commitment
award, and therefore undoable. For now, however, it looks like an
Alcatel award. As we get more confirmation from Bell Canada, we'll keep you informed.

Bell Canada has put itself in an interesting situation in starting
deployment with a CAP vendor and then switching to a DMT vendor at a
later date. Many industry pundits and service providers have pointed out
that there are MAJOR spectral compatibility issues with CAP and DMT
existing in the same network. If Bell Canada plans to replace its CAP
lines with DMT at a later date it could be a costly process and effect
profitability.

If DSL services take off in the near term, Westell could
find itself in a good position and Alcatel may have trouble justifying
why deployed CAP lines should be replaced with Alcatel DMT. "

The $64,000 question:

Can WSTL still find itself in a good position with BC or is it all over????

richard a: Something interesting to consider vis-a-vis ALA and WSTL

3 month stock price action looks dead heat:
chart1.bigcharts.com:80/chart?time=6&freq=1&uf=0&lf=1&type=2&style=1&size=2&comp=ala%3A7527&state=0&trans=0&symb=wstl&r=chart&compidx=aaaaa%3A0&ma=0&maval=9&sid=15786&sec=c&xyz=95041250&s=21629

2 year stock price action looks dead heat:
chart1.bigcharts.com:80/chart?time=9&freq=1&uf=0&lf=1&type=2&style=1&size=2&comp=ala%3A7527&state=0&trans=0&symb=wstl&r=chart&compidx=aaaaa%3A0&ma=0&maval=9&sid=15786&sec=c&xyz=94767359&s=5857

If ALA and WSTL represent 90% of ADSL, then what does this say about the market's current under/over-valuation of ADSL and how do you feel about ADSL's future today and going forward versus alternatives (ie cable, other) and versus your views on a need for bandwidth demand solutions coming from internet growth?

Good Luck To Each And All
