Yeah, IBM is pretty much all you know, I'm sure. But the reality is that even at IBM they don't create products that can't be sold at a profit. Ultimately, the "bean counters" have to be convinced a product can be profitable or IBM will shut it down just like any other business. (IBM's problem hasn't really been bean counters, but a lack of vision -- but we've had that argument before).

This paragraph illustrates very well why finance doesn't run a company...

I've never worked with a company that intentionally built products they couldn't make money on. I've worked with some who had systems so screwed up they didn't UNDERSTAND they were losing money on them. And it may be they think some temporary losses or loss-leader was called for, in the long haul, every product must be profitable or it is history.

I suppose you are claiming otherwise. Which probably accounts for the reason you were a salesman.
