Choosing the winner is best left to the markets. However, the government's job is to ensure competition and a level playing field, especially in industries with high barriers to entry. This is Econ 101 stuff and you should know it.

Hmm, I thought I just pointed out an example of problems created when government decided ethanol would be a winner. But thanks for telling me anyway. I agree choosing winners should be left to markets.

So it makes sense for our government to step in to the energy industry and provide massive subsidies, tax breaks, and investment in alternative energy solutions ...

And how is that alone different from what we did and are doing with ethanol?

What you didn't mention is that I suggested that government aid to alternative energy ideas (including mandated use) should END when the venture capitalists lobbying for that government aid exit via IPO. Thats the only way I can think of to provide aid for new technologies without creating perpetual drains like ethanol.
