CA as you describe seems like what we non-Californians assume it to be - only worse. Anarchy filled with crazy and lawless people, though I'm sure not everywhere is as bad what you experienced. I can understand why people are leaving.

I think your perception can be mostly confined to LA. There is a lot of corruption and bad behavior in LA. However, SD and maybe the OC are better. SFO is crazy but not as corrupted and Sacramento is like any other American city. CA is a strange state.....it has so much natural beauty that gets lost in its over population and its growing financial problems.

Liberals who get mugged are supposed to become conservative but I guess other things can prevent that - transference, stockholm syndrome, too much of one's self-identity tied up in your political identity. I will avoid more comments about liberalism b/o your condition.

In truth, my experiences have made me more liberal. People who talked about anxiety attacks, chronic fatigue, asthma etc I thought were whiners who didn't want to work. My bro in law, an R, had panic attacks when his first kid was born and I thought he was the biggest wuss....never said anything but I thought it. I've since learned that things can happen that can change a person's health and well being in a very short period of time. As a consequence, I have become much more compassionate. I particularly feel sorry for the soldiers coming back from Iraq......the ones suffering from PTSD. They have been trained to be macho and tough things out........and with PTSD, that's very difficult to pull off. Eventually some of them get overwhelmed and commit suicide. I find that very disturbing, knowing what led them to that end. If it weren't for the grace of God, I would have been in their shoes.

In addition, I have seen how our medical system works up close and personal, and it ain't pretty. It took two months to get my first appointment. They told me I had asthma, gave me a broncho dilator and steroids and sent me on my way. If it weren't for my cousin who is an MD, I wouldn't have had a clue as to what was wrong. Third MD was arrogant as hell and gave me misinformation re. dustmites that contradicted what my cousin and other MDs had told me. He was incredibly dismissive even as he ran my bill up to $2k in two appointments.

What has helped me the most is a breathing technique developed by a Russian doctor, Dr. Buteyko. His understanding of asthma and other auto immune diseases is light years ahead of this country, and yet, few American doctors will acknowledge his existence let alone try to understand his theories. In any case, its through this doctor that I have learned the most about my disease.

At any rate, you have had a lot of stress thrown at you (life changing things cause stress and you've had a host of them) and that may be making your other physical health problems (asthma, bronchitis, emphysema) worse.

Bingo. That's the essense of Dr. Buteyko's theories.......that stress is the primary cause of auto immune disesases like asthma, bronchitis, nasal polyps, chronic fatigue, diabetes, arthritis, etc. According to Buteyko, its through ongoing stress that our immune systems become impaired and auto immune diseases develop.

At any rate, I think you need to get off politics and political threads. You are on SI all the time basically engaging in divisive stuff all the time. You've talked about your hatred for "neos" being important to you. Hatred is bad for you. I've told you before and I'm telling you again for your own good. All those negative emotions can't be good for you. Its crazy to keep doing this. It has to be hurting you. So STOP IT. Don't talk to people online or offline about politics or divisive social issues, don't think about them, don't go to divisive websites. That includes liberal ones where you agree with the people cause the topic is always gonna be "how terrible are those other people" who aren't like us. That thinking isn't good for you. You're hurting yourself.

I understand what you're saying but a lot of my interacting on this thread is done with some affectation. I don't hate nearly as much as you think I do. And I do, in fact, enjoy talking about politics and other countries. What my hope is that through the buteyko method, I will regain a more normal and balanced life. Clearly, right now, its not nearly balanced enough......as you so keenly observed.

And thanks for your concerns and comments......most appreciated.
