The world we live in is growing more and more diverse; if you want an effective management team (which is basically what the SC does for our legal system) you'd want someone at least very familiar with Latina workers in a Florida factory, if not a Latina herself.

Most WASPy country club judges lack that experience. They will bring a different cultural perspective to their cases, it's inevitable.

Do we want the same vanilla judges in a 33-flavor world? Is vanilla inherently superior because it was always on top, or is it just old and out of date now?

If you read Outliers, you will come up with your own answer to that. I know you would not like mine, and I'm not sure you are even really interested, I'm not going to take the time to craft an answer. If you are seriously interested, and you want to craft a serious question, I will try to answer it. But just now I'm pretty busy, and I don't want to waste my time- no offense intended- I just don't want to be sent on a fool's errand.

For a widget factory diversity is not terribly important but things a bit more complicated, like Nature, can't do without it. <g>

I personally think Sotamayor got way too much flak for the wise latino comment - her main point may well have been about a female vs a male judge ;-)
