Learning is a continuum so these large breaks do seem contradictory but one worry would be losing teachers who prefer the summer break. And it'd be hard to estimate the role of the break in smoothing out differences between the kids in the lower grades and exaggerating them in the higher grades by those who take college level courses.

Elective classes modeled on a college is a brilliant idea - and it might be worthwhile to even try mimic the college work load over a week or so to get them ready. Many high-schoolers I know are shocked by the work load when they first get to college
