From what I've read, you lose the chance to keep your current coverage if they change the benefits (as most carriers do on a yearly basis) or if you are no longer eligible (such as when COBRA period ends). At that point, the public option is all she wrote.

As a practical matter, private companies can't compete with the government. The government just changes the line of scrimmage until the private company fails.

So, anyone with half a brain must know that if the Democrats get their paws on health care, choice goes out the window and the weaker members of society better plan on hospice care.

Sadly, it's as simple as that.
