NO insult intended, but David Brooks is a very weak thinker. He is like reading Readers digest (written at the 4th grade level). Brooks has always been the "civil conservative", but his ideas are usually not very sophisticated", or even good. Brooks is the conservative PBS and the NYT likes to use because he is polite and serves an acceptable middle right menu and so is the chosen token conservative i.e. the type of nice conservative that would never engage in any sort of racism, but also will not fight against it and let it flourish in the south for 100 years. The Hard left (where I live), has never had very much power throughout history, except during times of extreme need e.g. the New deal. We usually win in the end because the only thing wrong with our ideas is that they are ahead of the rest of the country e.g. womens right to vote, integration, universal health care. We are the only western democracy without it because of the right and middle. The middle has no ideas, they just act as a brake, or as they call it in political science "constructive conservativism. Think about it. Who voted in Nixon over MacGovern, when this country started to go down hill. The middle. There was vitrually no liberals that voted for Nixon. Look at what a HUGE mistake the middle made voting in Nixon over MacGovern! It was the left that fought against slavery, the womens right to vote, gave us social security and the new deal, fought for segregation and against the Viet Nam War, fought for the environment, evolution and recognizes global warming. The left is where the sophisticated progressive ideas are. We have a liberal president for the first time in a long time and lots of liberals in the congress and we are going to fight for our ideas and agaisnt David Brooks pap. We are going to try and make the changes this country needs to catch up to the rest of the world. Univeral health care, free education from head start through college. And PS, we have never done exactly what the right wing does-lol!! >> Yes, koan, I love liberals, but they are doing exactly what the "right wing" republicans did.
