koan, I don't care about Brooks, he's just "pap", but I think he's getting to the gist of the argument here. You're sort of summing it up in that post. "We're the liberals and we're the progressive thinkers and we will overcome the narrow mindedness of the masses" That was all very valid on issues like slavery, women's rights, civil rights. It worked on the "New Deal" and all that entailed too because of the times and lack of any real opposition to Roosevelt. Also, Roosevelt laid out the plans and Congress just had to O.K. them. We're in a different time now and the issues aren't so clear cut. Obama didn't even HAVE a plan on healthcare. He just said, "You guys come up with a plan". He's not offering any real leadership on healthcare other than cheerleading from the sidelines.
