The difference as I see it is that Charter schools provide a larger return for tax payer dollars than the public schools as we know it today.

I'm something of a fan of charter schools when they are constructed to give teachers more authority over the structure of the school. That was the case in NYC in the 80s and 90s; not certain now. But a blanket statement that they "do better" isn't true. Studies suggest there is basically no difference between comparable charter schools and public schools.

Some do, and some really suck. There is much less consistency in the results of charter schools, and they are far more dependent on the competence of the people who formed the school, and the powerful parents who pushed to either form it, or guide it. We have one in our district that is completely rot- there is no way I would send my own kids there. Mine went to some of the best public schools in our area, and they got a fantastic education. I wish the results of the charter schools would be more closely monitored and the schools that are truly horrible would be shut down quickly.
