Ascend not eager to jump into Lucent camp
The remote access market continues to consolidate at sky-high
prices with Lucent Technology's $650 million purchase of
Pleasanton's Livingston Enterprises last week.
But the pace of acquisitions may be about to slow.
Ascend Communications has been a player in the consolidation
process, buying Cascade Communications a year ago, but doesn't have
a new acquisition on its radar screen, according to CEO Mory Ejabat.
Ejabat, fielding reporters' questions after giving the keynote
speech at the telecommuting expo last week in San Francisco,
dismissed rumors that Lucent was eying Ascend. Ejabat said the two
companies never talked.
Ascend and Lucent are teaming to build Kinko's Internet customer
linkage at its 830 locations.
"Lucent's acquisition of Livingston was good for the industry
because by taking control of a small company it will bring better
pricing stability throughout the industry," he said.
Ascend plans to add 200 people to its worldwide payroll this
quarter, primarily in research and development, Ejabat said. He
added it has taken a full year to swallow Cascade.

 SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 29, 1997--

Remote Network Access Capacity Increased by over 200,000 Ports;
Performance Bar Raised

Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced another order for the
company's dial access platforms. U S WEST !NTERPRISE Networking
intends to deploy over 200,000 Cisco dial ports for its U S WEST.net
consumer and business Internet and dial access services over the next
five years.
U S WEST !NTERPRISE will deploy Cisco AccessPath(TM) dial access
systems, including the Cisco AS5200 and Cisco AS5300 universal access
servers, throughout its 14-state region. The new platforms will
expand U S WEST !NTERPRISE's capacity and will secure U S WEST.net's
position as one of the nation's most advanced Internet, intranet and
extranet solution providers.

High Performance, Density and Management Uniquely Position AccessPath

U S WEST !NTERPRISE selected the Cisco AccessPath dial access
system for its high performance, port density and management
capabilities. "Cisco's carrier-class AccessPath is uniquely able to
provide us with the level of performance and reliability our
customers demand," said John Charters, vice president of Internet
services and application development, U S WEST !NTERPRISE. "With
Cisco's high-performance platforms and comprehensive network

premier service. The company's superior support was another reason
we selected Cisco. We knew that we were not only placing
leading-edge products into our network, but that we would receive
world-class service and support."
The Cisco AccessPath system is a fully configured dial access
system that merges universal dial access, industry-leading routing
and high-speed data backhaul capabilities into a single scalable
architecture. The Cisco AccessPath enables service providers to
deploy multiple points of presence (POPs) quickly and
cost-effectively and scales to several thousand dial ports per POP.
All AccessPath components are integrated in a self-contained rack
cabinet, and are centrally managed with AccessPath Manager, a
Web-based system management software application designed to enable a
host of Cisco IOS(TM) software network services across the AccessPath
architecture.
"We have a long standing relationship with U S WEST !NTERPRISE,
one of the industry's most aggressive and innovative service
providers," said Don Listwin, senior vice president of Cisco's
service provider line of business. "Deployment of Cisco's AccessPath
system will support U S WEST !NTERPRISE's growth and bandwidth needs,
enabling U S WEST !NTERPRISE to continue to provide the highest level
