Gates' Liberal College Town No Stranger to Racial Dust-Ups
Racism Allegations in Recent Past at Harvard and MIT in Cambridge, Mass.

Thanks for posting that. My own experience is that

1. The argument which says there are not enough blacks on the faculty outside of the obvious places is quite correct. The reasons are multiple and I've seen a serious study which separates them. No doubt, one is low level racism, expections built on the past; another, is recruitment to graduate schools and, for that matter to undergraduate colleges; and so on.

2. The argument that someone was denied tenure at MIT for racist reasons is very hard to believe. The process of granting tenure, while closed to the public, is a highly, internally public business, very hard for one or two individuals to block. Lots and lots of oversight.
