this is the fundamental flaw in human nature that will eventually sink us all

It's not a flaw, it is a component necessary to basic survival. The individual that doesn't take their own interest ahead of someone else's doesn't survive to serve anyone else's interest.

Why is it that you think that doing something in your own self interest excludes the best interest of someone else?

I continually do things in the best interest of my clients so that my best interest can be served (I keep them coming back paying me for what I do).

Throughout history, people have continually risked their lives for family and country. In this, they serve their own interests... in that they can't live with themselves when they sit back and allow terrible things to happen. Ultimately they are doing it for themselves.

Your urge to do what the bible tells you to do is in your own self interest, you want to be in God's good graces. What could be more self-interested than wanting to get yer butt into Heaven (avoiding Hell)?
