The individual that doesn't take their own interest ahead of someone else's doesn't survive to serve anyone else's interest.<< so you believe that screwing others for personal gain is a good thing? don't ever complain about politicians, used car salesman or wall street bankers then, b/c they are merely exercising a "component necessary to basic survival." i couldn't disagree with you on a more fundamental level. i realize that this is the world in which you have been raised and don't know anything different, but this is the same world where 150,000,000 people died as a direct result of war during the 20th century. [after reading further on, it seems you are confused about doing things in your own self interest with no harm and elevating your own self interest well above others so you can, for example, capture government and steal trillions from the treasury.] >>Why is it that you think that doing something in your own self interest excludes the best interest of someone else?<< this is off topic. when you do something in your own interest that harms nobody, YOU HAVE NOT PUT YOUR SELF INTEREST WELL ABOVE ANYONE ELSE'S, hence, you haven't been selfish and self centered. >>I continually do things in the best interest of my clients so that my best interest can be served (I keep them coming back paying me for what I do).<< same as above - you haven't put your self interest above others - you respect your clients interests and make an honest living from it. if true, there is no need to feel guilty about that. >>Throughout history, people have continually risked their lives for family and country. In this, they serve their own interests... in that they can't live with themselves when they sit back and allow terrible things to happen. Ultimately they are doing it for themselves.<< each individual case is different. there is nothing wrong with self interest - it is when said self interest is put above the interests of others that things break down. and make no mistake, things are breaking down in this country. >>Your urge to do what the bible tells you to do is in your own self interest, you want to be in God's good graces.<< that's the wrong attitude. "those who would save their life shall lose it." if your reason for worshiping god is to save yourself, you've missed the ENTIRETY of the spiritual teachings of the bible. btw, i can't think of a single person who has an *urge* to do what the bible says. humans are hostile to the bible's message. it takes a lot of work and dedication and we still end up pretty pathetic. if we think we are doing anything good, it is almost certainly are own ignorance of what "good" actually is. >>What could be more self-interested than wanting to get yer butt into Heaven (avoiding Hell)?<< first off, eternal consciousness in hell fire doesn't exist - it was imputed into a parable about not ignoring the poor. the wages of sin is death and, according to the bible, the dead know nothing. well, if one actually believes the bible instead of popular dogma - and that isn't many. the idea god is a sadist who tortures ignorant people forever could only be made up by some pretty sick people looking to control the masses through fear and the fact nobody ever questions this dogma is evidence society is pretty much a bunch of sheep. secondly, you are exactly right...Mat 16:25: For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. if your goal is to save your own life, the prospects don't look so hot... *if* you believe the bible, anyway. again, the wages of sin is death. sin is transgression of the law. the law is to love god above all else and love your neighbor AS yourself. NOT love your neighbor LESS than yourself, as you claim is fundamentally required for survival.
