Read about the battle for Stalingrad. That became virtually hand-to-hand fighting between quite small numbers of men, and the Russians showed that when pushed they were the equal of the Germans. As far as callousness towards his troops (and civilians) is concerned, Hitler was as bad as Stalin. Mao was a similar case.
