It's fine for current hybrids. All of the energy still comes from the tank. The hybrid just stores some of that energy that would have otherwise been wasted into a battery, then uses that energy whenever it's most efficient to do so.

For plug-in hybrids, the gas tank is no longer the sole source of energy, which is why MPG isn't an accurate metric. The "gallon" in this case isn't the only thing on the input side of the energy equation.
