Rockwell technology for 1 megabit/second telephone modems............

ROCKWELL UNVEILS DSL TECHNOLOGY FOR HOMES -- Rockwell Semiconductor Systems
announced a new digital modem technology aimed at home consumers today which will move data up to 20 times
faster than current 56K analog modems. Consumer DSL (CDSL) will use existing copper phone wires and offers
Internet access at up to 1M. CDSL is similar to current asymmetrical DSL (ADSL) technology, but does not
require a line splitter to separate high-speed data from standard phone service. This makes the technology easier
and less expensive to install in homes, Rockwell's main target market. The company expects to roll out chips next
spring, and hopes to see complete CDSL modems available by the end of 1998. The most likely scenario is CDSL
cards for internal modems, because existing serial ports will not support such high-speed data rates. CDSL's main
competition will come from cable modems, which offer even higher speed communication. Although some
communities already have cable modem service, only about 15 percent of the cable infrastructure in this country is
currently able to support data over cable. Both the cable and phone industries are looking at significant costs to
upgrade their infrastructure to support the next generation of high-speed digital data services. Rockwell
