If its so profitable even without subsides, why have all the subsidies? I'm not trying to imply that it can't be profitable, as additional variable capacity in the places most suited to it (fairly high and steady winds, not too much NIMBY or other sources of cost or delay, adequate transmission capacity, or not too much distance from the capacity or cost to add it), but that makes for a niche product, not a large and solidly profitable mainstream part of base production capacity.
