I would up reading the same books, built a Heath Kit shortwave receiver.

Back then, US was world leader in electronics.

My first foray into electronics came a bit later. A friend had one of the first transistor stereo amps (a pathetically primitive thing) and I decided I could copy it instead of buying one. By the time I'd figured out the code of the coloured stripes on the resistors I'd started to realize that I was aiming too low. Later I built several amplifiers, the last one the current dumper design (used in Quad 405s) published in Wireless World. I'm still using it.
