Perhaps you weren't around, or were not paying attention as it happened. But the power of the UAW accumulated over an extended period of time as a result of repeated strikes and threats of strikes.

Managements in the US are held to account by a quarterly accounting process that encourages window-dressing and kicking the can down the road. Management at GM, DCX and F did precisely that. Caved to the pressure of the UAW.

Now, the fact that the UAW used legalized extortion to coerce management into making bad decisions does not in any way mitigate the fact that UAW committed such extortion. Sure, management should have been tougher, no doubt about it.

But that's like telling someone whose kid has been kidnapped not to pay the ransom. You can easily see why they might choose to do it even though you know they shouldn't.
