I believe one reason that Obama is in such a lather about health care, is just exactly because he knows how much the taxpayers are paying for the union benefits for government workers...it is not sustainable. There are fewer and fewer taxpayers, paying more and more of the burden.

The above doesn't apply to government employee unions, unfortunately. Taxpayers and private businesses take a hit in a down economy, but not them. They get theirs, in ever increasing and overly generous amounts, regardless.

Federal public employee unions are constrained from striking. In my experience, they mainly serve as an ombudsman for disputes between employees and supervisors. They have little power.

Your assertion that government employees don't take a hit in down markets is also incorrect. They have protections, but in a Reduction In Force there are definitely losers. Even the winners lose by being forced to relocate.
