Yankee fans and gays didn't build the Gulag and didn't kill millions of people.

True, and that's a very important distinction in most contexts, but its not highly relevant here.

A lot of evil has been done in the name of communism. I myself would go beyond that and say its an evil concept, not just a concept which is associated with evil. But an evil concept can be supported by non-evil people, and more to the point even if the specific people in question are extremely evil, evil people can still be right about things, esp. about things outside their ideology. After all Marxists have other ideas and thoughts besides Marxism.

And even when they are wrong, the fact that they are Marxists isn't a real argument that they are wrong (I'd say Marxism is wrong in every sense of the word, but if that was the issue in question, I'd need to make other arguments, not just say "he's wrong because he's a Marxist")

Not that I think that Obama is right about health care, (or that he's a marxist).

Marxists are totalitarian elitist by their very nature.

Well at least they believe in a totalitarian elitist process, whether or not its actually in the nature of the individuals involved.

So, Yankee fans and gays are not as bad as Marxists. Indeed. Personally, I don't think there's anything bad about either of the former although some folks seem to really hate them.

Whether the category is bad, big time evil, or benign, however, is utterly beside the point. You can't rationalize cognitive bias by claiming that the hated group deserves to be hated. It's still illogical--a cognitive bias--to claim that a Nazi can't possibly make an excellent strudel. You may not want to eat his strudel because the thought of eating a strudel made by a Nazi makes you sick to your stomach, but the strudel remains an excellent strudel. You cannot make a case that, because it was created by a Nazi, it's not a quality strudel.

In any case, steps towards larger government - and it's more ubiquitous involvement in our lives - lead in the direction of marxism -- and away from the ideals on which America was founded.... and which are the reason for our success as a nation.

On that you will get no argument from me.
