Slider,
I've much appreciated your investment insights over the years and once again would like to say thanks.

A quote from your last post:

"...Now we are faced with, among other things, the prospect of "death panels" under socialized medicine...."

If anyone reading this thread is interested in understanding the critical importance of the "Advanced Care Planning Consultation" you may want to read this reasoned, informed article from today's The Oregonian.

oregonlive.com

The article also explains the importance of a "POLST". I have one as do my wife and significant others.

This health care hysteria reminds me of an incredibly competent Cardiac ICU charge nurse (who was my client) who finally resigned from the local hospital because she felt that some of the hospital mandated procedures (like breaking the seal on the crash cart, no matter how totally hopeless the medical situation) was driven solely by revenue generation and subjected the finally dead patient to unnecessary violence. She found the whole premise morally repugnant.

As a retired therapist who wrestled for years with care-restrictive, endlessly greedy health insurance companies I can say without qualification that the ramblings of hysterical marginally functional illiterates like Sarah Palin makes the filthy rich health CEO's dance with joy.

Again, Slider, thanks for all your investment input. I fear you've gone around the bend.

Hasta

Shakes

"The address scheduled for September 8, 2009, does not allow for healthy debate on the President's agenda, but rather obligates the youngest children in our public school system to agree with our President's initiatives or be ostracized by their teachers and classmates."

NBC spoke with Katie Gordon, a spokeswoman for the Florida Republican Party, who said the party's "beef" is with the accompanying lesson plans. The guide for pre-K through grade 6 suggests questions students think about during the speech, such as "What is the President trying to tell me? What is the President asking me to do?"

The plan for grades 7-12 includes a "guided discussion," with suggested topics: "What resonated with you from President Obama's speech? What is President Obama inspiring you to do?"

The Cato Institute, a public-policy research foundation, issued a press release entitled "Hey Obama, Leave Those Kids Alone," criticizing the "troubling buzzwords" in the lesson plans:

"It's one thing for a president to encourage all kids to work hard and stay in school – that's a reasonable use of the bully pulpit. It's another thing entirely, however, to have the U.S. Department of Education send detailed instructions to public schools nationwide on how to glorify the president and the presidency, and push them to drive social change."

Across the blogosphere, comments covered the spectrum, from critical to supportive, and from one student, a little anger:

"I sent my children to school to be educated NOT indoctrinated." — justamom

I got the following email today. This is so scarey.....They've started it. I wish I was in a position to home school. Unreal, its happening now!

Dear Parents:

You may very well be aware that on Tuesday, September 8, President Obama will deliver a live address intended for school children across the United States.

All District 12 Schools will maintain a normal instructional schedule on September 8 and will not broadcast the President's address live. We do intend on recording the message so that we can potentially utilize all or part of it at school in the future if there is an appropriate educational value to its content. I encourage parents to do the same and take advantage of this opportunity as a valuable teaching moment at home.

Respectfully,

Dr. Walt Cooper
Superintendent of Schools
Cheyenne Mountain School District 12
