I disagree that its just me making folks like Dawkins or PZ Myhers influential. As for McWhorter, what did change his position so radically? That is still unexplained. The explanation he went from enthused to embarrassed in a few hours just doesn't wash. No, he wasn't picked up by helicopters or threatened with death, but something did force him to disown his initial enthusiasm very rapidly. That is alarming. Why does Michael Shermer have a column in Scientific American? He's not a scientist, doesn't do any scientific research.
