we are also talking about people who seem intent on destroying the US culture and not thinking in a long term strategic fashion.

And the whole eco-capitalism thing is clearly about redistribution of power and wealth.

But I do believe that the war in Iraq had multiple facets and some of them were not the stated reasons. I have no doubts that Bush was very aware that Saddam had nothing to do with Al Qaeda. I also suspect that Bush figured out that the WMDs weren't going to show up but that as long as Saddam did his posturing it was a free pass to proceed as planned.

Since the muslim extremist war on the U.S. had no national identity or boundaries, it was necessary to concentrate those who would do war on the U.S. in a single defensible location (Iraq) rather than letting them focus on attacks on US soil.

My point.....if I believe Bush could come up with a complex plan with hidden goals, why couldn't another president?

Additionally, when you look at a country like China that has long term economic plans that are slow and steady but lead to an economically dominant China, who is to say that a US president can't also start thinking in a long term strategic manner?

My main argument AGAINST what I put out there is that wind and solar would never get us even close to a place where we could start ignoring foreign energy sources.

And the only way to really decouple our foreign oil needs is through transportation changes. But oil is also used in a wide variety of manufacturing applications.

But then again, have you noticed the focus on not using bottled water? Those plastic bottles require petroleum as an ingredient.

If we went nuclear we could rely on domestic oil for manufacturing needs.

Sorry, I know I am rambling, but i want to give this devil's advocacy a fair shake.
